U.S. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson has accused Islamic State militants of genocide against a range of religious groups. In a speech on August 15 to release the State Department's annual International Religious Freedom Report for 2016, Tillerson said that the militants are "clearly responsible for genocide" against Yezidis, Christians, and Shi’a Muslims in areas they have controlled. "[Islamic State] is also responsible for crimes against humanity and ethnic cleansing directed at these same groups, and in some cases against Sunni Muslims, Kurds, and other minorities," Tillerson added.
