Welcome to the first episode of the Gandhara Podcast. Our aim is to bring you informed perspectives and engaging discussions on pressing issues and the latest developments in Afghanistan and Pakistan.

As U.S. President-elect Donald Trump appoints key members of his administration, the governments and people in Afghanistan and Pakistan are waiting to see how he approaches America’s longest war in the region.

To understand what Trump’s victory means for the two countries, the challenges he will have to tackle, and his likely options and priorities, we turned to regional specialists. RFE/RL Media Relations Manager Muhammad Tahir moderated this discussion from Washington, where we were joined by Michael Kugelman, a South Asia scholar at Washington’s Wilson Center think tank. From Berlin, Afghanistan Analyst Network co-founder and former UN diplomat Thomas Ruttig shared his take on the issues. I joined the discussion from Prague.
