An Afghan mullah has been sentenced to 20 years in prison after he was convicted of raping a 10-year-old girl in his mosque.

The Kabul court sentenced Mullah Mohammad Amin on October 25.

The girl and her father were dissatisfied with the decision, saying that Amin should have been sentenced to death.

But the judgment was welcomed by women's rights activists as a victory for female victims of sex crimes in Afghanistan, where rape is often considered a form of adultery in which the victim is sent to prison.

Hassina Sarwari, the head of a women's shelter in the northern Konduz Province where the rape occurred, praised the ruling.

Five men were hanged near Kabul on October 8 for gang rape.

International rights organizations urged President Ashraf Ghani not to allow the men to be executed.
