Khyber is often the scene of militant attacks.

Local officials said at least five people were killed and seven wounded in a suicide attack that targeted a peace committee meeting in a restive Pakistani tribal area.

The bombing took place in Pir Mela village of the Khyber district, some 100 kilometers southwest of Peshawar on October 15.

The officials said a suicide bomber blew himself up killing and wounding tribesmen attending a meeting of anti-Taliban elders.

There were no immediate claims of responsibility for the attack.

Khyber is located in Pakistan's semi-autonomous tribal belt near the Afghan border.

Militant groups linked to the Taliban and Al-Qaeda have a strong presence in the area and stage attacks both in Pakistan and Afghanistan.

Pakistani military jets have recently conducted air strikes targeting suspected insurgent hideouts in the area.
