Richardson’s winning image, which was never published, depicts a migrant passing a baby underneath a razor-wire fence on the Hungary/Serbia border. As well as other images of the migrant crisis, highlights selected here include a whale and her calf sharing the sea with divers, an ominous storm bearing down on Sydney, and a highly symbolic face-off on the streets of Chicago.

This image from the series shows a Slovenian police officer on horseback escorting migrants after they crossed from Croatia. Under Europe's system of open internal borders, the island's thinly patrolled, easily accessible coastline, within sight of the Turkish coast, might as well be the frontier of France or Germany or Sweden.
